He penned scores of enduring and heartfelt songs, including such all-time favorites as "Let A Smile Be Your Umbrella," "Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang of Mine," "I Can Dream, Can't I?," "April Love," "Strange Are The Ways of Love," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "Tender Is The Night." Fain, who was nominated 10 times for an Academy Award for best song, won twice, for "Secret Love" in 1953 and "Leave Is A Many Splendored Thing" in 1955. Fain began composing in 1925 and from 1927 until 1942 teamed up with lyricist Irving Kahal. He wrote music for the films "Alice In Wonderland," "Peter Pan," "Calamity Jane," a 1953 version of "The Jazz Singer," "Thre Sailors And A Girl," and "April Love," his Broadway stage work included music for "Hellzapoppin," "George White's Scandals," and "Christine."
