Born Barnabas Dearth, Barney was the last of nine children born to William and Susan Williams Death. It was during his generation that the 'R' was added to the surname, giving Dearth. He was first married to Mary Shutts (or Shutte) on June 25, 1841. After her death in 1843, Barney married again to Mary Jane Mead. Their union was blessed with eight children.
From "The Dearth Genealogy" by William H. Dearth:
"Barney was a farmer by occupation. He was a breeder of blooded horses. Like his father, he was a violinist, and with his son Barney, Jr., furnished the music for the dances and other social gatherings in his community. He was a Democrat. They resided near Jacobstown in the western part of Monroe county."
