He was born to A.V. and Lizzie Lee Kendrick Dedmon on February 14, 1938 in Rowan County. Joe grew up in Cleveland County and graduated from Shelby High School in 1956. He attended Gardner-Webb College (now University), and after service in the US Army, graduated from Limestone College in 1966 with a BA Degree in Business Administration.
Joe was always interested in mechanical things and spent his adult life working at A.V. Dedmon Trucking, Inc., in charge of truck maintenance. He had served as Secretary-Treasure of the business, and at the time of his death he held the office of Executive Vice-President.
Among Joe's hobbies were travel, gardening, and the restoration of a 1946 Mack truck, which was exhibited at the American Truck Historical Society meeting in Greensboro in 1997. Joe had a "giving" heart and when he gardened, he grew extra food to give to friends who had no garden.
