Family legend say that John and his father Daniel and others were headed to Texas; when they stopped in the area to water the horses. They liked the land and the taste of the water was sweet, so they decided to stay. They built lean to shelters from which to live for awhile. These were later used as horse sheds, a place to shoe and shelter them.

John Coggin Meadows married Julia Ann Cook on 4 Jan 1838 in Coweta. During the civil war John Coggin Meadows worked as a blacksmith, in the railroad shop where he was listed as deaf.
