Herbert C Baker was the 3rd son and youngest of eight children born to Samuel Hodgdon (1817-1901) and Mary Ann (Howell) (1822-1906) Baker of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, who owned a thriving Carriage business in the mid to late 1800's. His father was originally from Pennsylvania but had relocated to Kentucky and built Coaches. Herbert was born in August, 1862, and grew up in a nice home valued at $4000 in 1870. In 1880, he began working as a carriage trimmer. He also married, in the 1890's, to Magdalena Agnes and the couple moved to 635 E. Green St., Louisville. They were due to have their 1st child in late 1898 and "Lena", as she was known, delivered their baby girl on October 18th, 1898, but her lungs never inflated and she never took that 1st breath so she died. Herbert and Lena were both devastated but then Lena began having convulsions, seizures that were indicative of Eclampsia. She died that same day and was buried with her daughter at Cave Hill Cemetery on Oct 20th, 1898 in the Baker plot. Herbert moved back home. He would not remarry for many years, until 1908, when he married Beulah (Lunn) Drysdale, a divorcee with a 16 year old daughter, Anna Mae. She lived with them at their home on N. 32nd Street in Louisville and Herbert, by 1910, was working at his father's carriage factory. Anna Mae was now employed as a bookkeeper. By 1920, Herbert was self employed as a "car trimmer" (detailer) and their home's mortgage had been paid off. Also, Anna Mae has married Carl Herder, a native of Kentucky, and they are living with her mother and stepfather. By 1935, Anna Mae and Carl would have moved to a home of their own at 121 S. 32nd St. where they would live with their 2 daughters, Beulah and Glorianna, per the 1940 Census. Also, by 1930, Herbert and Beulah were living alone in their home on 32nd St. which Herbert valued at $4500. He was still employed as an auto detailer or "car trimmer". Beulah died on Dec 12th, 1930 at the age of 60 yrs. She was buried in the Baker family plot at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. Herbert also passed in the month of December, on Dec 20th, 1934 at the age of 72 yrs. He was also buried in the Baker family plot at Cave Hill Cemetery, near both Lena, Beulah and his baby daughter. May they all Rest, at Peace, in Paradise.
