Helen Luella Aringdale, 87, of Columbus Junction died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011. at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born April 10, 1923, at home near Cairo, she was the daughter of Roy and Nellie Lillian Pierce Aringdale.
Miss Aringdale worked from October 1942 to February 1943, at the Louisa County Rationing Office in Wapello and worked at Smithcraft in Columbus Junction. She moved to Columbus Junction in 1943, and worked from 1944 to 2010, at the Columbus Gazette. She was also the church typist for the Rev. J. B. Pooley from 1945 to 1950, and part-time librarian at Columbus Junction Public Library since 1982. On June 16, 1990, she was honored as the first Volunteer of the Year at the library.
She attended Amity rural school and graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1941.
She attended Cairo Evangelical Church, and became a member of Columbus Junction Methodist Church, serving for more than 25 years as the Sunday school treasurer. She later became a member of Independent Bible Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary, served on church committees and helped with church services at nursing homes. She attended 17 of the IFCA National Conventions since 1980.
She was a member of Louisa County Historical Society, and honored by the Columbus Junction community in 1998, as the Distinguished Citizen for Columbus Day. She enjoyed local history and genealogy, and presented historical slide programs for school children and other groups, and enjoyed visiting and helping older people.
Survivors include one cousin, Robert Aringdale of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction.
The funeral for Miss Aringdale will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, with the Rev. James Braden officiating. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship at Hope Bible Church will follow burial.
A memorial has been established.
