Pageant Vet Dies After Show

"Doris needs me," H.C. Auld told his wife this year as Oregon Trail pageant time approached and for the fifth time the veteran gate keeper took over the inconspicuous but important job of checking participants' passes. But the fifth show was the last for Mr. Auld and the pageant will have to find a new gate keeper for the Saturday night show, for soon after he returned home from the pageant Friday night, Mr. Auld died from an attack of thrombosis. He was 65 years old.

Mr. Auld was born Nov. 1, 1876, in Atchison, Kansas. He attended the Michigan Military
academy, at Orchard Lake, Mich., and was a member of the American Olympic tennis team, which played in St. Louis in 1906. He was a member of the Elks lodge.

For six years after his graduation from military academy, he worked in a bank in Kansas City, leaving at the end of that time to returned to work in the Atchison First National bank, of which his father was president and founder.

On Jan. 9, 1909, he married Katherine Hourigan, of Kansas City, moving the same year to Oregon, where he and his brother David organized the Mohawk Lumber company.

For the past few years, Mr. Auld has been retired.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Katherine Mary; three sons, H. Carroll Auld, Jr., William Wallace and John Robert, all of Eugene. A sister, Mrs. Frances Auld Darling, died in 1934.

Carroll Auld, Jr., married Myrna Bartholomew, July 6 of this year and the couple has been living at Fort Lewis, where he is an officer in the 15th calvary. They are en route to Eugene where they had planned to attend the pageant Saturday evening.

William is home on furlough from Co. M, 186th Inf., also stationed at Fort Lewis.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Veatch chapel, Rev. Francis P. Leipzig officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial park.
