Death came suddenly to Frank Backus
The residents of this community were greived and shocked last Thursday morning by the news that Frank Backus, one of Smethport's best known and most populars citizens had died very suddenly at Hazelhurst the night previous.
While visiting Chars. Beers of Hazelhurst, he suddenly lurched forward and expired due to heart disease. While apparently in good health, he had complained of not feeling well.
He was the son of Major John C. Backus and Mary A Winsdor having been born in Smethport, March 11, 1866. His father was a vliant civil war soldier and eminent lawyer who served for a time as district attorney of McKean county and ably represented his county in the legislature.
He was on of a large family of children. Besides his mother Mary A. Backus, he is survived by 3 brothers, J.C. Backus, M. B. Backus of Smethport; Fred W. Backus of Olean and two sisters Mrs. Lucy (William) Seger of NY and Mrs. Nellie (Arthur) Cutler of Oneonta.
There was not one mean characteristic in his makeup, his disposition was sunny, his heart true and he was generous to a fault.
When the Spanish American war broke out, Mr. Backus promptly enlised in teh 43rd Separate company NGNY of Olean spending dome time in camp but peace was declared before his until received sailing orders. When the US entered WW I, his years forbid active service but he worked on the McKean County Council National Defense.
Interment was in Rosehill cemetery.
