CHAUNCY WOODRUFF b. Norwich twp., Huron County O., 20 Feb 1820, son of George H. and Hannah (Burgett) Woodruff, and grandson of Chauncy, who with his son George H., came from Saratoga Co. NY in 1817, and was one of the first two families to settle in Norwich Twp.

Chauncy (the Captain) was reared and schooled in Norwich Twp. and then attended the Norwalk Academy (in the class with Rutherford B. Hays). At the outbreak of the Mexican War in 1846 he enlisted in Co G, 3rd Ohio Infantry, and was made Captain 28 May 1846. He resigned in Oct 1846.

He at first taught, but then became a brick and stone mason. 7 May 1851 Chauncy md. Juliette E., the daughter of John and Maria (Clary) Sanders of Peru twp. They had three children: Lewis of Fairfield twp., Stanley of Paineville and Nellie C. who md. George C. Bacon.

On 6 Nov 1861 he enlisted in Co E. 64th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was made 2nd Lt. 1 Dec 1861, later promoted to 1st Lt. and finally promoted to adjutant of the regiment. He veteraned with the company in Jan 1864. He was wounded in the left leg at Stone River Tenn. (Dec 1862), was in the hospital for four days, returned to action, was captured, lost his sword, but was rescued by his troops the same day. In Aug 1864 he was hospitalized with dysentery before Atlanta, and suffering with rheumatism at Lookout Mt., he resigned in Nov. 1864 at Chattanooga Tenn.

Returned to Peru, he settled in Macksville and farmed land on both sides of the Peru-Bronson town line. He was Justice of the Peace and Postmaster of the village. He was the enumerator for Peru twp. for the 1880 US Census. Becoming active in the Firelands Historical Society, he served as President in 1885-1886. He d. at his home 25 Oct 1896, and is buried in Brightman Cemetery.
