Longtime local resident and teacher Alice Irene Morgan, 96, of Rainier died Sept. 14, 2010, at the Hospice Care Center.

She was born March 17, 1914, in Portland, to Milan F. and Roseabelle (Davis) Smith. The family moved to Rainier in 1920. Alice graduated from Rainier Union High School in 1931, Pacific University in 1935 and Oregon Normal School in 1936.

On Sept. 12, 1942, Alice married Ralph Morgan in Longview. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Alice taught at Prescott School in Prescott, Ore., from 1937 to 1941, at Rainier Union High School from 1942 to 1947 and at Rainier Elementary School from 1962 to 1987. She held numerous memberships over the years including the Oregon Education Association, was past worthy matron of Wisteria Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, past noble grand of Fern Rebecca Lodge and member of Wabanang Chapter of Order of Eastern Star in Clatskanie.

Alice cherished spending time with her family. She loved nothing more than being involved in her grandchildren's lives and activities, attending as many events as possible. She was an avid sports fan, rooting for Rainier High School and the Portland Trailblazers. She also enjoyed gardening and keeping in contact with her former students.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Mike Engle of Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Terrie Morgan of Clatskanie; four grandchildren and their spouses, Thomas and Tabitha Engle of Fort Mill, S.C., Leign Engle of Tampa, Fla., Christina and Brian Boothe of Clatskanie, and Amy and Ben Montgomery of Longview; and four great-grandchildren, Jackson Boothe, Lilly Boothe, Kaden Engle and Carter Engle.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Rainier with Pastor Ron Jacobson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632 or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Western Washington Chapter, 192 Nickerson St., No. 100, Seattle, WA 98109.
