Born Maggie O'Regin, she was a cabaret performer when she made her debut on the Broadway musical stage in 1951, at the age of 37. A popular entertainer, she received a Tony Award and Critics Circle Award for her role as the mother in the Broadway production of "Bye Bye Birdie" (1960) and was nominated for Tony Award for her role in "Funny Girl" (1964). For feature films, she appeared in "Random Harvest" (1942), "Swing Shift Maisie" (1945), "Guilty Bystander" (1950), "Mr. Walkie Talkie" (1952), "A face in the Crowd" (1957), "The Rat Race" (1960) and received a nomination for a Academy Award for her role of Fanny Brice's mother in "Funny Girl" (1968).
