Meeks Family Stories:
Peter Meeks, also known as "Doc", was born with a club foot in Pittslvania County in what is now Virgina. He was a Confederate Spy in the War against the States. In one engagment with the enemy (Northern Yanks), Peter eluded capture by hiding in a hallowed out tree. He was shot in his shoulder at one point, however, it was never removed. He and his wife's family had farms near Bean Station which are now under Cherokee Lake in Grainger County. The area was a producer of tobacco and Peter was both farmer and cigar maker.
