He was elected to represent Alabama's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1859 to 1861. After his home state seceded form the Union and the Civil war erupted, he enlisted as a Private in the 12th A;abama Infantry, but rose to serve as it's Regimental Quartermaster for one year. He was then elected to represent Alabama in the Confederate Congress, serving from 1862 to 1864. After the was he served in the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1878, and as an Associate Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court from 1884 until his death in 1892.
