She was the only Estes Child adopted with a handwritten letter of consent from her mother on May 24, 1933 It was likely that it was the result of pressure from local and municipal authorities while living in a boarding house known as the Hopkins Hotel in Tecumseh, Nebraska. It was also a time when thousands of depression children from the eastern United States were being adopted by farming families in Nebraska.

Robert and Doris "Jean" Schmidt and had four sons. Jean's legally adopted name was Bentzinger and her birth certificate remained as Estes.

James R. Schmidt - Born September 26, 1949 in Athens, OH. James, also a veteran, served in Viet Nam in a Vehicle Maintenance Division. On April 2, 2004, he succumbed to massive effects of cancer and preceded his father in death. His earthly remains are interred at Quantico National Cemetery.
Daniel D. Schmidt - Born 1955 in Washington D.C. Daniel served in the U.S. Navy. Resides in Idaho or Arizona.
Andrew A. Schmidt - Born 1962 in Washington, D.C. and resides in Tennessee. Andy's wife Lisa, an experienced family historian, created "Jean's Life History Book" to pass on to Jean's sons.
Jean and Robert were divorced in 1972 and she remarried in 1992 to Mr. Tommy J Schoenewald. It was the loving and religious marriage she cherished in the final years of her life. Tommy is resides in Wyoming.
