MARY MORALES
1956 - 2010

TURNER - Mary "Rose" Morales (Mary Rose Morris), 54, died December 31, 2010 after a brave eight month battle with brain cancer. She died in her home in Turner, Oregon surrounded by family and friends.

Rose was born at home in Ocean Lake, Oregon (now Lincoln City) to Don H. and Clarice T. Morris. She married Leonard "Randy" Williams in 1981. Rose gave birth to twins Ashley Rose and Erin Lynn in 1988. She divorced in 1990. She remarried in 1999 to Reinar Morales. They built their family home shortly after in Turner, Oregon where she lived until her death. Her first grandson was born in January 2010.

Rose graduated from Lincoln City's Taft High School in 1974 where she was involved in cheerleading, student counsel, and the honor roll. She was awarded several scholarships which she used to gain a B.S. degree in Advanced Mathematics from Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in 1979. Rose returned to school and earned her Masters in Education in 1992. She has since completed more than 45 additional credit hours of Continuing Education. Rose had a passion for learning and teaching.

Rose used her education to teach in the secondary and higher education systems in Colorado, Utah, and Oregon. She spent the last decades of her life in Salem teaching middle school math at Leslie and Crossler. She was known for her "Scuba Field Trip", having taken over 1800 kids to the pool to try scuba diving. She was nominated for the 2009 "Crystal Apple Award" for excellence in teaching and the 2010 OnPoint "Educator of the Year." She served on Math Leaders, Team leader, 21st Century committee, and many other committees which aimed to improve education in Salem and throughout Oregon. Rose also groomed many future teachers through Willamette University and other student teacher programs.

For many years Rose was active in the youth programs at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Rose's interests over the years have included world travel, scuba diving, health and exercise, cooking, softball, swimming, camping, fly fishing and dance. She completed the Portland Marathon twice, once at age 40 and again at 50. Recently she passed her motorcycle safety course to get a motorcycle endorsement. Her greatest joy however came from being a mother and grandmother.
