I remember my father as respected, strong-willed, quiet man. He was the chief of the local fire department for most of my life. I well remember being awoken by the fire alarm and hearing my father leave the house; I'd often try to stay up until he came home smelling smoky. I always loved to play in his turnout gear - there are many photos of me waddling around in his boots and jacket.

He was the type of man to walk up to you at church and shove cash in your hand if he heard you were having a rough time, though he rarely spent any money on himself.

His funeral was a breath-taking affair - fire trucks lined the funeral route saluting us as we drove by led by an honor guard of members of the motorcycle club that he loved so much. His best friend, Tommy Chaffin, drove behind the motorcycles pulling his riderless bike.

15 years after his death I still run into people, who, after hearing my last name exclaim that they "knew an Athey once, he was named Jack; gosh he was a great friend" and go on to ask if I know him. That always gives me a warm feeling.
