Lovissa was born in Olme, Varmland, Sweden to Maria Nilsdotter and Per Westberg (Andersson). Lovissa was 10 when her mother died. Ten years later, Lovissa emigrated to America with an older sister, Christina. The sisters are said to have worked as servants until they were married.

At age 21, Lovissa (also known as Louise) married Andrew Johnson, a carpenter, who was also a Swedish immigrant. In 1900 Lovissa and Andrew had 3 children and lived in Chicago. By 1910 Lovissa and family lived in San Gabriel, California. Andrew and their oldest child, William, were both carpenters. Daughter Clara was a dressmaker and Albin was a clerk at a water company.

Lovissa died in 1915 at age 51. Andrew died 4 years later.
