My great grandfather, William Thomas Baker, was originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He was one of 3 sons (and five daughters) of Samuel Hodgdon (1817-1901) and Mary Ann (Howell) (1822-1906) Baker, also of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. In 1880, the U S Census for Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, which was taken on June 4, 1880, has him living in Louisville in a new dwelling, working as a carriage painter, and married to a woman named Isis, age 32, born in Indiana. There is also a son, Samuel N., age 8, born in Kentucky, who is at school. There is no record of either an Isis or Samuel N. Baker with those birthdates after this census.
William Thomas Baker traveled to Oregon after 1880, settling in Albany, where he met and married Nellie Olivia(Burkhart)Royce, a young widow, on July 21, 1891, in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. They had one daughter, Pearl Laura Baker, b.Mar 2, 1895. William was a carriage maker and painter by trade. He died of "consumption" (TB) on March 14, 1900, leaving his wife Nellie, again, a widow. At his family's behest, his remains were returned to Louisville, Kentucky where he is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery with his other family members. His little girl had just turned 5 years old when they came and took her daddy's remains by train back to Kentucky. I am one of her granddaughters and she never spoke of him or the loss of her father in all of the 24 years I knew her. I wonder now if she was aware of her father's 1st family, though I sincerely doubt it unless her mother spoke to her about it. I also believe it was a very painful memory for her.
