Gudrun was born in Nebraska where her parents had homesteaded near the Platte River. She qualified as a nurse in Chicago. When she was 45 years old she married Arvid Løfgren. Arvid was a doctor of Swedish descent. He was a widower and had five children from his first marriage. The family settled in California. Gudrun had no children of her own, but her stepchildren treated her as their "real" mother. When Gudrun's own mother, Anna Tonette Johnson, was older she came to live with Gudrun and her family. She became "Grandma Johnson" to the children. In the Hollinbeck family, Gudrun was known as "Aunt Goodie".
