He joined the Philadelphia Organized Crime Family in the 1930s and took control of the Family from Antonio Pollina in 1959. A revolt led by Antonio (Tony Bananas) Caponigro, the Bruno Family Consigliere, ended in the murder of Angelo Bruno. On the night of March 21, 1980, he was shotgunned to death while he was sitting in a car in front of his house in South Philadelphia. After his murder, Caponigro thought he was going to be named the new boss of the Philadelphia Family. However, he had not been given authorization by the Mafia Commission to remove Bruno. As a result the Commission named Philip Testa as the new boss of the Philadelphia Family. Caponigro was found shot and stabbed to death in the trunk of a car in the Bronx, on April 18, 1980.
