At the age of 85, James faithfully farmed his land and tended to his sheep and other animals daily. As well as farming, he was a former employee of the U.S. Shoe Factory where he worked in the maintenance department;as well as working for the Jefferson Proving Ground and Arvin Industries in Columbus, IN earlier in his life.
On Feb. 12,1928 James married his first wife Bernice Brindley. To this union were born two daughters:Rose Marie (Heath Stegemiller) and Bernice Pearl (Morton). Sadness fell over the community on Feb. 5, 1934 when the news came of Bernice's death. James married his second wife, Mae Taylor on Nov. 30, 1934. They were blessed with two children, a daughter Mary Ann and a son James Edward.
James was a member of Mt. Sterling Baptist Church.
