US Congressman. He served in the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 10th district as a Democratic-Republican for two consecutive terms from March 1795 until March 1799, and as a Republican from Pennsylvania's 4th district for five consecutive terms from March 1805 until March 1813 and from Pennsylvania's 9th district for one term from March 1813 until March 1815. He attended Princeton College (now Princeton University) in Princeton, New Jersey, graduating in 1773. After studying theology, he was licensed to preach by the Donegal Presbytery in 1777 and was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1779, becoming a missionary in Virginia and west of the Allegheny Mountains. From 1786 to 1789 he served as a pastor at Bedford, Pennsylvania, and later at Frankstown (now Hollidaysburg), Pennsylvania. He died about the age of 71. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
