This is a common fallacy. The consensus among experts, including H. L. Mencken, seems to be that "Sam Hill" is an euphemism for hell. The origins of the phrase still remain obscure, but the evidence that the phrase was not coined for the Samuel Hill of Stonehenge is irrefutable.
