Served during the Civil War as Major and Chief Surgeon of the 34th New York Volunteer Infantry, winning the brevet of Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers for his services. He was elected as a Republicam to represent New York's 17th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1863. His name is inscribed on the 34th New York Infantry Monument on the Antietam National Battlefield which is located on Confederate Avenue behind (West) of the Dunker Church. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
