U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Centre College Kentucky, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847, moved to Independence, Missouri, in 1848 and commenced to practice law. He was a delegate to the Missouri State convention in 1861, appointed Provost Marshal of the sixth district of Missouri in May 1863 and elected recorder of deeds of Jackson County in 1868. In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for renomination, President Grant appointed him a member of the commission to arbitrate with the Sioux Indians for the possession of Sioux lands in Dakota bordering on the Black Hills, serving (1876-81). Returning to Missouri, he retired from public life until his death at age 69. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
