He represented Great Britain twice in the Olympic Games (1920, 1924) and in 1924 equaled the Olympic record in winning the 100-meter dash and winning the Gold Medal (he also one a Silver Medal in the 4x100 meter relay). He later became an executive in such organizations as the British Amateur Athletic Federation and covered sports as a radio commentator and as athletics correspondent for the London Sunday Times (1925 to 1967).
