About 1873 he married Permelia "Amelia" Seabaugh. Together they had at least four children; the firstborns were twins Johnson and Johnathan and then George, currently I don't know the name of the fourth child.
James lived in Cape Girardeau and White Water, Missouri. In Missouri his principal occupation was farmer. By 1900 the family had settled in Coalgate, Indian Territory where James and Amelia owned their own home free and clear. However Jim had turned to coal mining and had most likely been out of work for over a year at the time the 1900 Census was taken.
In his old age James moved in with his son Johnson, possibly to help him raise his three children after their mother died.
