This family lived at Ephrata in 1942, when John Bucher died of a heart attack. He was a farmer and an ordained Mennonite minister. He was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, son of Jonas W. Bucher. During most of his life, John Bucher farmed and sold fertilizer in northern Lancaster County. He was an acquaintance with Joseph Lehn (1798-1892), of Clay Twp., who was by trade a cooper, and who also made a variety of woodenware including painted saffron boxes. Bucher was ordained a minister at Hammer Creek Mennonite Church on Sept 1, 1892, where he and Lehn were both members. John Bucher was also well acquainted with Jacob N. Brubacher (1838-1913), also a Mennonite minister and Bishop at Hammer Creek. Bucher was inspired by both Lehn and Brubaker and in his retirement, also produced saffron boxes for sale and as gifts. Bucher continued the production of saffron boxes into the 1930's, imitating Lehn's form and decoration. His examples were usually paint-decorated in a strawberry and pussy willow pattern. His woodworking activities may explain the loss of the finger.
