LTC Robert Leon Webb, Sr
Birth: Aug. 2, 1897
Crisp County
Georgia, USA
Death: Mar. 17, 1962
Randolph County
Georgia, USA

Robert Leon Webb was a son of Lee Hampton Webb and (Sarah) Willa (Gatlin) Webb, born in Cordele, Georgia on Aug 2nd, 1897. He married Ruth Warters, a graduate of Shorter College and school teacher. Their marriage was a fruitful one. He became the father of three sons: Robert Leon Jr. (b.1924), Lee Hampton III (b.1928) and Thomas Warters Webb (1931-1969). He was a graduate of Clemson College who enlisted in the Army and fought during World War I. He then became went to work at the local guano (fertilizer) plant in Cordele, 1st as a Bookkeeper when the 1930 Census was taken on Apr 14th, 1930, then as a Sales Manager at the same company when the census was taken on Apr 6th, 1940. He was called into active duty after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, 1940 and became a career Army man [and my mother worked for him in the "secretarial pool"] at Columbia Army Air Base in South Carolina during World War II where he was 2nd in Command from 1939 to 1943. He then was the Executive Officer at Kellogg Field, Michigan, from 1943 to 1945. He introduced my future mother to his son, Robert, my future father, while in South Carolina. They dated and later married in 1944. My grandfather and grandmother lived at 511 East 16th Avenue in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia. They came from Georgia to California to visit their son, his wife and grandchildren twice while he was alive, in the 1950's. He was a rather quiet, soft spoken man who we were quite taken with. Robert Leon Webb, Sr. died March 17th, 1962 at the age of 64 yrs., leaving behind my grandmother, Ruth (Warters) Webb, who would live until 1991, just before her 95th birthday. He was buried with full military honors and is interred with many other Webb relatives, including his wife and parents, at Sunnyside Cemetery, Cordele, Crisp County, GA.

Remembering your birthday, 119 years ago this month, dear grandfather. I know you are in Heaven with my dad where there is no pain. Rest well, dear grandfather. With Love with your middle Yankee granddaughter in Oregon,
