Norton Henry was the first child of five born to William H. Messenger and Laura Abigail Thayer Gilbert. This was a 2nd marriage for both his parents though records do not show that his mother brought any children to the marriage.
Norton Henry married Clara Belle Allen Poland, a widow, and daughter of Thomas Jefferson Allen and Mariam Jordan Leighton, on March 7, 1888. They had six children: Lavera Adah, Lee Allen, Erna Belle, Orville Norton, Thomas William, and Frederick Glenn, all born in Washington County, Iowa.
N.H. was engaged in various businesses in his life. He was primarily a physical laborer and a Mason for 55 years. It is also said that he loved music and even played the fiddle in his younger days. He had a beautiful bass voice and loved to sing with his family.
His older half-siblings [by Elizabeth Manville, mother]: Eliza; George Washington; James John; Grover [died young]; Nicholas Clare; and William Wallace. George, James, Nicholas and William moved to Iowa with the family in early 1855.
