Son of Clarence Henry Sr & Alice Mabell (Troyer) Neff; sibling - Ann Elizabeth; half-siblings - Harold Earnest and Clarence Henry Neff Jr. Married Barbara Ann Kem on 27 June 1943 in Marion, Grant Co, Indiana. They were the parents of Christopher Kem and Elizabeth Ann Neff.

Died at age 81 years, 10 months, 16 days.

Commanding Officer of the USS GOODRICH is CDR John Lawrence Neff, USN, of 8 Chase Lane, Middletown, Rhode Island.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence H. Neff, CDR Neff was born July 2, 1919 in Marion, Indiana. He was appointed to the United States Naval Acadey from the 5th Congressional District, Indiana in 1938, graduated in December 1941, and received his commission.

First duty in January 1942 was on board the USS NEW ORLEANS (CA 32) as 5" Battery Officer. After this tour of duty, in August 1944, he attended the Gunnery Officers Ordnance School in preparation for his assignments in February 1945 as Assistant Gunnery Officer of the USS BREMERTON (CA 130), in August of 1947 as Gunnery Officer of the USS OAKLAND (CL 95), and November 1948 assignment to the Material Division of the Bureau of Ordnance. In 1951 he attended the Language School located at Anacostia, Washington, D.C. for studies in the Spanish language. In May 1951, upon completion of this school, he was a member of the Venezuela Naval Mission as Techical Advisor at the Naval Academy. Returned to sea in December 1953 as Executive Officer of the USS FECHTERIER (DDR 870) after which, in June 1955, CDR Neff became Commanding Officer of the USS GOODRICH (DDR 831).

During World War II, CDR Neff participated in the invasions of Guadalcanal, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and Marianas Islands.

He married the former Barbara Ann Kem in June 1942. Their children are Christopher age 6 and Elizabeth age 3.
