Matthew Pettigrew died on May 10, 1883, aged 84 years.
Most of the family is buried at their family cemetery known as the Pettigrew Cemetery. It is surrounded by a rod-iron fence. There are several graves outside of the Pettigrew Cemetery for the Anderson family. The cemetery name later was changed to Melrose Cemetery.
