SAMUEL BILLINGS
---Samuel J. Billings, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Billings was born in the New Harmony neighborhood near La Plata, Missouri on the 27th day of July, 1886 and grew to manhood in that community.
---At the age of seventeen years he was converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and remained a member until it ceased to exist, at which time he united with the Christian Church, the church to which his wife belongs.
---He was married on the 20th day of August, 1908 to Alice Moudy Daugherty. They made their home in Adair County, Missouri until the spring of 1918, when they moved to Hollywood, Dunklin County, Missouri.
---Mr. Billings was taken down with influenza on Monday, the 14th day of October which developed into bronchial pneumonia on Wednesday, October 16th and which terminated in his death at 12:15 p.m., Friday, October 25, 1918. He was thirty-two years, two months and twenty-two days of age.
---In his short stay at Hollywood he made many friends who made their friendships and kindness for him in his last illness manifast in many loving acts of service and sympathy. Almost from the first he realized that he could not recover and told those who were in attendance with him at the moment when he began to expire that "he was looking over the other side." He was a kind, lovable christian man, sober and honest and a devoted son, husband and father. He had great faith in God and the Savior, and was preparing to meet them when life became extinct. To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.
---The remains were shipped from his home in Hollywood to La Plata, Missouri and interred at New Harmony cemeery on Monday, the 28th day of October. The funeral was preached by Rev. C.E. Barnett of La Plata.
---He is survived by his wife, Alice M. Billings and three children; two sons, T. Joseph and Arley W. Billings, whose ages are respectively eight and two years, and one daughter, Bessie Alice Billings, aged five years, and a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T.J.
