Captain Fred Stanley Wright 73, Retired San Diego City Firefighter/Arson Investigator Capt. Wright was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Fred and Marguerite Wright. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1950 as a YN3, received his degree soon after and moved to San Diego. He went to work for Convair before applying and testing high in his class for the San Diego Fire Dept.

He joined the San Diego Fire Dept. on August 4, 1954, promoted to Fire Engineer on March 13, 1964 and received his promotion to Captain on July 15, 1966. He was one of the first pioneers for the department's Arson/Fire Investigation Unit for 15 years before going back into the ranks and finishing 30 years in the department, retiring on Sept. 12, 1984. He continued employment teaching Fire Science courses at the colleges and worked at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group as a Security Guard for 14 years, continuing on as a Volunteer until a month ago. He was always very active in his community, umpiring in the S.D. County Baseball League for 20 years, volunteering for the S.D. City Libraries, for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, for the city of S.D. Parking Mgmt. Div., for the Calif. Highway Patrol and for the State of Calif. Dept. of Parks and Recreation Silver Strand State Beach as a Camp Host.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1812 for 19 years, served on the Board for the San Diego Fireman's Relief Association, and a Clamper / Humbug with E Clampus Vitus Squibob Chapter for 40 years. He was a loving dear husband and father, sincere and highly respected friend among all whose lives he touched. He enjoyed the outdoors and every chance he had would pack up the motorhome and suitcase, for cruising with his wife.

He was an avid reader and also loved to help his wife expand her rose garden. Fred passed away at home in San Diego, Calif. after battling prostate cancer surrounded by the love of his wife and family.

He is survived by his loving wife Alma Milan; his sister Helen Phillips of Plainfiled, Indiana; three sons: Terry Brooks and his wife Beth of Evanston, Illinois; Michael Wright and his wife Michelle; Steve Wright of San Diego; and four granddaughters: Elena and Madeline Brooks; Megan and MacKenzie Wright. Funeral Mass to be held at St. Joseph's Cathedral, 1535 3rd Ave, San Diego on Friday, July 11, 2003 at 7:45 pm. Donations or memorials may be sent in his name to the San Diego Fireman's Relief Association, 10509 San Diego Mission Rd., San Diego, Calif. 92108. Interment will be at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.
