Birth: Mar. 12, 1831
Richland County
Ohio, USA
Death: Nov. 29, 1920
Champaign County
Illinois, USA

George Washington Painter, a son of Andrew and Catherine Painter, was born in Richland County, Ohio, where his paternal grandfather entered land in 1814, and his father was enumerated in 1830 and paid a tax in 1836. Andrew Painter's household was enumerated in 1840 and 1850 in Clark County, Ohio.

The earliest record of George W. Painter is an 1852 city directory for Springfield, Clark County, where he worked in livery, the trade of stabling and hiring out horses (consistent with family tradition that he also was a stage coach driver.)

George W. Painter and his first wife Elizabeth Harr were married on 13 October 1853 in Clark County, Ohio. She died probably in late 1855 after traveling to Champaign County, Illinois.

George Painter and Louisa Stine were married on 19 August 1858 in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois.

"Obituary: George Washington Painter," Gibson City Courier, Illinois, 9 Dec 1920, p. 2.
"George Washington Painter was born in Clark county, Ohio, March 12, 1821, and died November 29, 1920, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Painter [née Charity Jane Painter], in Dewey. He was 99 years, 8 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He came to Illinois with his family about seventy years ago, making the trip in a covered wagon, and settled near Houstonville, Ill., having moving to the Foos farm and there he lived for many years.
"The deceased was married twice. His first wife was Mrs. Lizzy Hore of Ohio. To this union two children were born. Emanuel Painter of Foosland and one child who preceded him in death. His second marriage was to Louise Stine of Saybrook and to this union the following children were born: Mrs. Mary Jordan of Bloomington; Mrs. Laura Burshall [Burchnall] of Urbana; Mrs. John Painter of Dewey; Wesley Painter of Champaign; William Painter of Rantoul; and Frank Painter of West Liberty, Ill. One step-son, John Stansbury of Champaign, also survives this marriage.
  "He is survived by 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
"The funeral was held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Painter, south of Dewey, the services being in charge of Rev. A. N. Simmons of White Heath. Interment was made in the Mt. Hope cemetery, north of Foosland.
"A precious one from us is gone. The voice we love is still. There is a vacant chair in our home."

"Aged Dewey Man Buried Wednesday," News Gazette Champaign, Illinois, 3 Dec 1920, p. 4.
"Dewey, Dec. 1—Funeral services for George W. Painter who died Monday evening [29 November 1920] were held at 10:00 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, south of this village. Rev. A. N. Simmons of White Heath was in charge and burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery near Foosland. Mr. Painter was born March 12, 1821, in Clark county, Ohio, and came to Illinois in the early days making the trip in a covered wagon and resided in this community for many years. He was 99 years, seven months, and 18 days old at the time of his death. He was married two times, his last wife, Mrs. Louisa Painter dying nine years ago. He leaves the following children: Mrs. Laura Burchnall, Urbana; Mrs. Charity Painter, Dewey; William Painter, Rantoul; Frank Painter, West Liberty; Manuel Painter, Foosland. One child by his first wife died in infancy. He also leaves one stepson, John Stansbury of Champaign; 31 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild."

Date of birth

Despite the evidence of great age, family researchers believe that George Washington Painter's age was exaggerated by a decade; that he was born about 1831. His parents were born about 1804 and married probably in the late 1820s. The single mark for a boy under age 5 in 1830 census for his father's household probably represents an older brother, Nicholas (born about 1829). George Washington Painter and his brother Emanuel Painter (who reported he was age 33 when he enlisted in 1864; thus born about 1831), may have been twins.
