Services for Edith Jane Gange, 88, Aberdeen, and formerly, Mellette, are 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Vicar Bret Bierman officiating. Burial at 11:15 a.m. in Mellette Cemetery. Edith died Dec. 25 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.
Visitation is 1-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 with family present 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7p.m. at the funeral home.
Edith Barton was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Loyalton, S.D. to Sidney and Ethel (Downen) Barton. She lived and attended school in Loyalton until her family moved to Mellette.
She met and married Lawrence Gange. Four children were born to this marriage. Edith made her home in Mellette until 2002 when she moved to Aberdeen.
Edith loved her family and cherished the time she was able to spend with them. In her free time, she enjoyed drawing for her children and grandchildren. Edith loved to sew and also enjoyed listening to music and dancing. She was a 48-year member of the Mellette American Legion Auxiliary.
Grateful for having shared her life are: daughters Betty (Jerry) Akin, Springfield, Neb.; Doris (Paul) Schmidt, Aberdeen; and Ethel (Myron) Hammer, Mellette; daughter-in-law Diane Gange, Funk, Neb.; brother-in-law Fred Stern, Aberdeen; grandchildren Renee Koons, Scott (Melissa) Reiss, Ryan and Kayla Akin, Nicole and Jessica Hammer and Donielle and Derek Gange, great-grandchildren Heather and Jeremy Koons, Tyler and Connor Reiss and Alex and Tristyn Gange; step-grandsons, Sterne (Allison) Akin, Courtney Akin and step-great-grandson, Benjamin Akin.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents Sidney and Ethel Barton; husband Lawrence Gange; son Donnie Gange; great-grandson Trae Gange; two brothers, Jim and Jesse Barton; and four sisters Opal Stern, Bessie Baasch, Beatrice Grandpre and Edna Barton.
Honorary casketbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Renee Koons, Kayla Akin, Nicole and Jessica Hammer, Donielle Gange, Heather Koons, Tyler and Connor Reiss, Alex and Tristyn Gange and son-in-law Paul Schmidt.
