Actor. He was a popular supporting actor who appeared in over 190 films, from 1935 to 1973. Making his debut in "G-Men" (1935), his career was interrupted by serving in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to films playing character roles in "Nora Prentiss" (1947), "Adventures of Don Juan" (1948), "Convicted" (1950), "Invaders from Mars" (1953), "Sitting Bull" (1954), "Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold" (1958) and "The Fastest Guy Alive" (1967). For television he was best remembered for his role as the Sheriff Fred Madden in the TV series "The Big Valley". He also was a regular on "The Lone Ranger", "Alfred Hitchcocks Present", "Rawhide", "The Texan" and "Bonanza".
