Eugene was the son of Daniel Wickham Colburn and Emeline A Archibold born about 1843 in Collins, Erie County, New York he served in the Civil War for the United States in Company G, 8th Regiment of United States Infantry in 1861 and Company L, 10th Regiment of New York Cavalry in 1862-1865.

He married Jennie E. unknown date unknown place, having one son Arthur D. Colburn born 14 Feb 1876 in Buffalo, New York.

His second marriage was to Ada J Joyner on 29 Oct 1882 in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan, United States. They had three children: Clayton Eugene born 11 Oct 1884 in Reed City, Mecosta County, Michigan. Lulu May 11 May 1887 in South Dakota. Maud Emily born 22 Feb 1891 in Wisconsin.

Eugene died only a few short months before his wife on 22 Mar 1893 from consumption (TB). He was laid to rest in Wisconsin Veteran Tribute Cemetery.
