The son of Peter & Catherine Grubb Strickler and the husband of Mary McDonough Strickler. In 1860, he was a plasterer living in Blair County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Huntingdon County February 20, 1864, with Co. M, 22nd Pa Cav (185th Pa), at the rank of private. On June 24, 1865, he and the rest of the regiment transferred to the 3rd Pa Provisional Cav, a consolidated unit. He received an honorable discharge on October 31, 1865.
