Rockdale, Texas. March 20. -- Joseph L. Lockett, 76 years old, died at Cameron Hospital Saturday night after an illness of some months. Mr. Lockett was a native of England, but had long been a resident of Rockdale, where he was in the mercantile business and also a building contractor for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, and funeral services at the residence were conducted by the Right Rev. Bishop Kinsolving of San Antonio, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Carden, rector of St. James Church of Rockdale and also of the Episcopal Church at Taylor. Funeral services at the grave were held by the Masonic Fraternity, of which Mr. Lockett had long been a member. Mr. Lockett is survived by his wife and three sons and daughters. Representatives of the Masonic Lodges from Cameron, Milano and Thorndale were at the funeral. Many floral offerings were sent. Dallas Morning News, March 21, 1922

J.L. Lockett (1845-1922) migrated to the United States from England in 1869. A builder and engineer by trade, he was employed in the railroad construction industry. His business brought him to Texas in 1877. The following year he moved to Rockdale and opened a mercantile store. He designed this house which was constructed for him in 1901 by Henry Struve of Taylor. The late Victorian home features detailing of the Queen Anne style.
