US Senator. Born in Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1857. He attended Oregon schools and studied law, served in the Oregon State Senate from 1880 to 1898, and was a member of the National Republican Committee from 1892 to 1896. He was elected as a Senator from Oregon to the United States Senate, serving from 1898 to 1903. After his term in the Senate, he served as Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1909 to 1911. (bio by: RB)
