Emerton E. "Skeet" Moroughan, 71, of 432 S. James St., World War II veteran and former operator of Central Garage, died Tuesday (May 9) evening at Carthage Area Hospital, where he had been a patient for about a week.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pierce Cemetery, Fargo Corners, on Fort Drum.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home. Memorial services will be conducted by members of American Legion Post 789 at 7:30 p.m. and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7227 at 8 p.m.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; a son, John, Syracuse; a daughter, Mrs. Herschel (Joan) Gamble, Carthage; three sisters, Agnes Keefer, Black River, Mrs. Robert (Dolores) Ferguson, West Carthage, and Mrs. Donald (Mary Jane) Coman, Carthage, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Peter, two brothers, James and William, and a sister, Georgia, died before him.
Born Jan. 1, 1925, at Woods Mills, now Fort Drum, son of William and Blanche Brown Moroughan, he moved with his family to Carthage in 1929 and graduated from West Carthage High School in 1942.
He worked at St. Regis Paper Mill, Harrisville, until entering the service in March 1943. He was shipped overseas and served in the 401st Bomb Group until the fall of 1944, when he was transferred to the 66th Fighter Wing, 8th Air Force. He was discharged in June 1946.
While serving with the 401st Bomb Group, he was awarded numerous medals including the Presidential Citation with an oak leaf cluster.
After his discharge, he was a truck driver until 1953, when he went to work for Central Garage, West Carthage. In 1969, he bought the business from Roy Clark.
Mr. Moroughan moved the business to Carthage in the mid 1980s and operated it until 1993.
He married Elizabeth Lazore Jacobs on Aug. 30, 1975, at Carthage. A previous marriage to Leonora Speight ended in divorce.
Mr. Moroughan was a member and past noble grand of Carthage Odd Fellows lodge; a member and past commander of Post 789; a life member of Elks Lodge 1762 and a member of the 66th Fighter Wing Association.
Mr. Moroughan also was a life member of VFW Post 7227 and a member and past commander of Mohawk-Adirondack Counties Council, the Past Commanders Club and the Jefferson County Veterans Association.
