War of 1812 veteran, blacksmith, bridge builder.

William Burgess, son of Anna (née Metcalf) and Joseph Burgess, was born in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. William Burgess was a blacksmith, iron bridge builder, and farmer. Also a War of 1812 veteran, he was a private in the 72nd Regiment, New York Militia, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas H. Hicks.

William Burgess and Esther Williams were married on 28 January 1810 in Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont. Later that year, William Burgess advertised his blacksmithing business in nearby Waitsfield, where the couple's first son, John Chandler Burgess, was born in 1811. The next son, Allen R. Burgess, was born in Massachusetts in 1812.

In the early 1810s, according to the eldest son's biography, the William Burgess family moved to Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, for 4 years. Then, the family moved to Pittstown in the same county, where William Burgess built an iron bridge over the Hoosic River. After 2 years there, the family traveled to Oneida County, New York, where the seven younger surviving sons were born. (Younger brother Allen M. Burgess "was extensively known as a bridge builder.")

"William Burgess and family arrived in the township [Russell Township, Geauga County, Ohio] September 12, 1833 [...] and resided there till the death of the father, November 9, 1848."*

Other children not linked:
• Anna Louisa (b. 1816)
• Norman (b. 1818)
Both died in infancy.
