Matthew Scott was a Captain in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Line, in the Revolutionary War. An extract of his obituary from the Carlisle Gazette and the Western Repository of Knowledge, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania follows: May 23, 1798: Died at his seat in Shippensburgh, Sunday last, about half after ten in the morning, parent and husband, long a resident of this little town; served in the Revolutionary War; taken prisoner in the battle of Long Island
