Birth: Apr. 8, 1830
County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Death: May 17, 1887
Waupaca County
Wisconsin, USA

Mary grew up in the village, settlement, or townland of Eskanabrogue approximately five miles northwest of Clogher. She was the daughter of George Humes and Mary hunter. Her father was a tailor and farmer. She and Francis were married December 20, 1850 in St. Macartan's Cathedral, Parish of Clogher, County Tyrone by Church of Ireland clergyman, William Brownlow Ashe (witnesses, William Moor and William Walles). To their union were born ten children-George, Rolin, Albert, Samuel, Ida, Jefferson, Charlotte (Lottie), Robert, William, and Lucy.
Mary Jane and Francis left Ireland for America sometime in late 1853 or early 1854. Their first son, George, was born in New York Harbor on February 17, 1854. From New York, they moved to Changrin Falls, Ohio, where their second son, Rolin Charles, was born October 18, 1855. After 1860, the family was living in Black Wolf Township near Oshkosh, Wisconsin where they stayed for several years. In 1868, they finally settled on a farm at Little Wolf near Royalton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Mary Jane's sister, Margaret, and possibly her brother, George Hunter, followed them to America in 1855.
Many years later, Mary Jane and Francis separated dividing up their farm and personal property. From then on they lived independant lives for the most part. Some records indicate they were divorced, but in reality, they may have just separated. Their son, Samuel, purchased Mary's farm shortly after her death in 1887. Francis spent his final years in very poor health and had to be taken care of by others at a care facilty.
