GARNETTA FERN JONES, WINTERSET


Garnetta Fern Jones, 96, of Winterset, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Greater Regional Hospice House in Creston. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Garnetta was born on April 16, 1914, on the family farm in Scott Township, Madison County, Iowa to Lloyd and Margaret (Picken) Jones.
In 1932, she graduated from Winterset High School and briefly worked at an ordnance plant in Des Moines and also as an airline ticket salesperson before settling on her career as a teacher. She received her education to be a teacher from Drake University and Simpson College. She had been a lifetime resident of Winterset and Madison County. Garnetta taught in country schools in Madison County and for the Winterset and Des Moines school systems. Garnetta had been a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and was active with the Republican Party.
Garnetta is survived by her sister-in-law, Charlene Jones of Oelwein; brother-in-law, LaVerne Grubbs of Creston; nieces and nephews, Delores Armentrout, Linda Squiers, Janice Poling, Michael Jones, Lori Jones, Lisa Piersehbacher, Sherry Lynn Wright, Karen Myhr, Steve Ford, Sandra White, Barbara Grubbs, Gary Grubbs, Charles Boots and Bill Boots.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Margaret (Picken) Jones; brother, Lyle A. Jones; sisters, Kathryn Ford, Thelma Jones, Gerrie Grubbs, and Doris R. Boots; brothers-in-law, Bill Ford and Bob Boots.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday, Dec. 15) from noon to 8 p.m. at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home. Memorials will be directed to Greater Regional Hospice in Creston.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
