Billy, the son of Lester Hedge (deceased) and Mildred P. Dayson, the brother of Charles Hedge, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 27, 1963 in Indianapolis IN. He arrived in Vietnam assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
While crossing the Cu De River near the Nam O Bridge an amphibious tractor lost power, and was taken under tow by another LVT. During the rescue operation the tow line broke and the crippled LVT B-36 sank in the swift moving river. All on board drowned, including CPL Hedge who was one of the passengers, his remains were recovered and identified on December 16, 1965.
