Walter Wilbur Zabriskie was born in Pagosa Junction, Colorado, January 23, 1902, a son of the late Walter Xerxes and Daisy Pomeroy Zabriskie. He attended Kemper Military School at Booneville, Missouri and received a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1924. He worked for the American Bridge Company at Gary Indiana, Bethehem Steel Company in Bethlehem, Pa., and then Orange Car and Steel Company in Orange before going to work for Texaco in Port Arthur, February 15, 1929. He worked in many capacities in the engineering department at Texaco. He retired as senior project engineer in the inspection department February 1, 1967.
Walter was married to Luella Holcomb in Orange, June 1, 1935. They have lived in Port Arthur since that time. Mr. Zabrislie had been active in many civic activities. He was awarded a plaque by the mayor for outstanding service to the city while serving on the Public Works Study Committee. He served as director and president of the Port Arthur Works Employees Fereral Credit union. He has the distinction of having developed the code for tank strapping and capacity tables while on the ASTM Committee, which system was adopted by the American Petroleum Institute for measuring petroleum in tankage.
He was a member of the United Methodist Temple. He was active in Port Arthur Founders Lions Club, a past president of the Knife and Fork Club and a most interested member and supporter of The Little Theatre. He was also a member of the Men's Garden Club and of the Port Arthur Texaco Retirees Club.
Survivors include his wife, Luella Zabriskie of Port Arthur; one brother, Jesse Zabriskie of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Margie Zabriskie of Alamagordo, N.M.; four nieces; three nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.
