US Congressman. Born in New York City, New York, despite being only fifteen years old he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, and was mustered in as a recruit Private in Company A, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 21, 1863. He served in his unit's subsequent engagements, being severely wounded during the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. He recovered in time to rejoin his regiment for the last days of the war, and present in April 1865 when the Confederates under General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. In the 1869 he immigrated to Nevada to peruse mining and manufacture interests, but in the mid-1870s he studied law, and was admitted to the Nevada State Bar in 1880. He served a two year term as Ormsby County's District Attorney, then ran as a Republican to represent Nevada in the United States House of Representatives. Elected as an At-Large delegate, he served two terms from 1889 to 1893. Declining to run for a third term, he lived for a time in Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC, serving as editor o "National Bimetallist" magazine. He returned to Nevada in 1902, and served in various state offices until his death in 1918. He was buried with full military honors. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
