US Senator. Served as superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum from 1887 to 1891. Elected Mayor of Portland, Oregon, serving from 1905 to 1909. Elected as a Senator from Oregon to the United States Senate, serving as a Democrat from 1913 until his death in office in 1917. He was the grandson of Joseph Lane and nephew of LaFayette Lane.
